The Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi has been selected as one of TIME magazine’s World’s Greatest Places 2026. It has earned a place on the prestigious annual list. This list highlights 100 exceptional destinations worldwide.
The honor positions the museum among a distinguished group of global cultural and travel hotspots, and as one of only two destinations featured in the Middle East category and three across the wider MENA region.
Located in the heart of Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District, it is home to one of the world’s highest concentrations of leading cultural institutions. The museum opened its doors on 3 December 2025. Since then, it has quickly emerged as a major cultural landmark. It offers visitors a sweeping journey through 300,000 years of human history in the region.
The museum also pays tribute to the life, vision, and enduring legacy of the UAE’s Founding Father, the late H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, through six permanent galleries, an outdoor gallery, and a dedicated temporary exhibition space.
Zayed National Museum’s collection features some of the most significant artefacts ever discovered in the UAE. Among its highlights are the Abu Dhabi Pearl — one of the world’s oldest known natural pearls. In addition, the Blue Qur’an is celebrated as one of the finest manuscripts in Islamic art.
A standout centrepiece is the full-scale reconstruction of an ancient Magan Boat, created through a pioneering research collaboration with Zayed University and New York University Abu Dhabi. The project brings to life a key chapter of the region’s maritime heritage.
Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, the museum’s striking structure draws inspiration from the wings of a falcon in flight. This is a powerful symbol of Emirati identity and a reflection of Sheikh Zayed’s values. Furthermore, its soaring form has already become one of Abu Dhabi’s most recognizable architectural signatures.
TIME’s World’s Greatest Places list is compiled annually, spotlighting destinations that deliver unique, innovative, and memorable experiences for travelers and cultural enthusiasts. The 2026 edition continues the magazine’s tradition of identifying standout locations. These locations represent the best of global exploration.
Selections are made through nominations from TIME’s international network of correspondents and contributors, supported by an open application process.
