Authorities in the UAE capital have put in place guidelines to preserve aesthetic appearance on public roads and ensure a more organised urban environment.

Among those rules is prohibiting the placing of laundry or the cleaning of carpets and coverings on windows and balconies overlooking public roads in Abu Dhabi.

The Department of Municipalities and Transport has taken to X on Sunday to warn against fines and administrative penalties amounting to up to Dh2,000 in case of repeated such violations.

Placing drying racks outside windows or balconies on any side of buildings overlooking the public road entails a fine of Dh500 for first-time violators. Authorities will impose Dh1,000 if the violation is repeated for a second time and Dh2,000 in case of further violations.

Similar penalties will also be imposed on those who clean or place carpets, coverings, or other items on windows or balconies facing the public road.

Residents have repeatedly been warned against airing laundry on the balcony of apartments, hanging them from the windows or railing as it distorts the city's appearance.

"Airing laundry on the balcony of an apartment or hanging them from a window or railing distorts the image of the building and is not allowed," said Abu Dhabi municipality in a previous statement.

Last month, Abu Dhabi also issued regulations and penalties for leaving dirty and abandoned cars in the emirate's streets.

Vehicle owners will be imposed with hefty penalties for leaving their vehicles in public places in a way that distorts general appearance. This includes leaving their vehicles dirty.
