Rain in the UAE has been the heaviest seen in the country for 75 years as heavy downpours hit the region.

The record-breaking showers, the heaviest ever witnessed since the formation of the United Arab Emirates, occurred in the Khatm al-Shakla region of Al Ain in Abu Dhabi.

The area saw 254.8mm of precipitation in less than 24 hours.

A message shared on government-run media office X account said: “The National Centre of Meteorology announced that the UAE witnessed the largest amounts of rainfall during the past 75 years, and that the “Khatm al-Shakla” area in Al Ain witnessed 254.8 mm of precipitation in less than 24 hours… thus making the country achieve an exceptional event recorded in its climatic history.”

The heavy rain was not limited to Al Ain, with heavy downpours and flooding across the whole of the United Arab Emirates.

The NCM issued a red alert weather warning as heavy rain is expected to continue into Wednesday, April 17.
